The Power of Habits:
Creating Daily Practices to Support Your Goals
Hello Inspiration Nation!
I hope you are all doing well and have started your 2025 on track!
In our last article we talked about setting SMART goals and how to do that. Today I’d like to do a follow up to that article discussing creating positive daily habits to stick to working on those goals and actually be successful.
Let’s talk about it….
Introduction
Setting SMART goals is a great first step toward achieving the life you want, but the key to success lies in the actions you take every day. This is where habits come into play. Habits are the building blocks of long-term success—they help you create momentum, stay consistent, and make progress without relying solely on willpower. Let’s explore how habits work, how to build ones that support your goals, and how to get started today with a fun challenge designed to set you up for success.
1. Why Habits Matter
Habits are automatic behaviors that shape our daily lives. Research shows that up to 40% of our actions are driven by habits, meaning they play a significant role in determining whether we succeed or fall short of our goals.
The Benefits of Positive Habits:
Consistency: Habits make progress feel effortless over time, removing the need for constant decision-making.
Efficiency: Once a habit is established, it requires less mental energy, freeing your focus for other tasks.
Momentum: Small habits compound into significant results, helping you build confidence and stay motivated.
As James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, says, “You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.” Habits are those systems.
2. How to Build Habits That Stick
1. Start Small:
Begin with habits that feel almost too easy. For example, if your goal is to exercise more, start with a single push-up or a 5-minute walk. Small wins build momentum and make it easier to expand later.
2. Anchor to Existing Routines:
Tie new habits to something you already do. For instance, if you want to meditate daily, do it right after brushing your teeth or before your morning coffee.
3. Make It Attractive:
Incorporate rewards into your habits. For example, allow yourself to listen to your favorite podcast only during workouts or treat yourself to a relaxing bath after completing a task.
4. Remove Friction:
Make habits easier by removing obstacles. If your goal is to eat healthier, prep meals in advance or keep fresh fruits visible on your kitchen counter.
5. Track Progress:
Use a journal or an app to record your habits daily. Seeing your streak grow is motivating and creates a sense of accomplishment.
6. Focus on Identity, Not Outcomes:
Instead of saying, “I want to read more,” say, “I am a reader.” Aligning habits with your identity reinforces the behavior.
3. Examples of Habits for Common Goals
For Health Goals: Drink a glass of water first thing in the morning, stretch for 5 minutes, or prepare a healthy lunch the night before.
For Financial Goals: Check your bank account daily, set a reminder to save a specific amount each week, or track your spending.
For Personal Development Goals: Read one page of a book daily, write in a gratitude journal, or practice a 5-minute meditation.
4. A Challenge to Get You Started
To help you take the first step, here’s a 7-Day Habit-Building Challenge:
Day 1: Identify one small habit that aligns with your goal. Write it down.
Day 2: Decide when and where you’ll perform the habit. Anchor it to an existing routine.
Day 3: Take action—complete the habit for the first time.
Day 4: Add a small reward after completing your habit.
Day 5: Track your habit. Use a journal, app, or even a simple checklist.
Day 6: Reflect on your progress. How does completing this habit make you feel?
Day 7: Celebrate! Recognize your accomplishment and plan to continue for another week.
This challenge is about building momentum. The goal is not perfection but consistency. Even small steps can create lasting change.
Conclusion
Habits are the secret weapon for achieving your goals and creating a life you love. By starting small, staying consistent, and aligning your habits with your identity, you’ll build systems that make success inevitable.
